Artists and Curators - A Curatorial Workshop, with Laura Knott

This workshop is part of Cambridge Art Association's new curatorial initiatives. We strongly suggest that CAA members who plan to propose an exhibit for the 2019/2020 exhibition season attend this workshop. 

This workshop will examine some recent curatorial strategies and practices, as well as recent (and welcome) changes to the field. Context will include past groundbreaking exhibitions, as well as important contemporary interventions in curatorial thinking and making. Minds-on learning will include the mechanisms of making exhibitions: how works are selected, what audiences are addressed, how research and writing convey curatorial views, and the roles of the curator in relationship with artists.

About the presenter: Laura Knott began curating exhibitions in 2005, as an extension of her artistic practice. She has worked on almost 100 exhibitions, focusing on topics ranging from the melting glaciers of the greater Himalayas to, most recently, the sources and methods used by contemporary artist Joan Jonas in the development of her video and performance works. From 2016-2018, Laura served as consulting curator in MIT's Arts, Culture, and Technology Program, working on projects related to the CAVS 50th anniversary. She has had an active art career as well, with presentations of her work at the documenta exhibition, on public television, and in venues ranging from the California desert to a revolving door on the MIT campus.  A graduate of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, Laura studied environmental art and performance with Otto Piene and took every film and video course offered at the Media Lab by Ricky Leacock and Glorianna Davenport.
