Description

Singularity Black.  What is it?

NanoLab’s Singularity Black has the lowest visible reflectance of any paint available. It is a carbon nanotube paint that comes in two formulations. The original formulation made for NASA to reduce light reflectance on optics; this version has to be heated to 300 degrees celsius.  And the more user friendly Singularity LT  (low temperature) that only needs the use of a heat gun to activate so it can be used on cloth or over cured paint.  Both versions result in a structural black surface that swallows light, creating a black unlike any other paint and you can buy it today.

About the Presenter

Jason Chase is currently an artist-in-residence at Nanolab, Waltham, Massachusetts. Singularity black, a carbon nanotube paint, was developed by Nanolab for NASA and Jason was instrumental in making “the blackest black” available to everyone.  In the last year his residency has involved guiding artists in how to use it best, advising the lab on how to make it better and supplying the lab with ideas on adapting more of their tech into the art world. Jason was instrumental in developing the world’s first carbon nanotube oil paint, gravity black, and a soon to be released hue-less white paint. Jason's hand-painted samples of these materials are now part of the Forbes Harvard Pigment collection and the Yale pigment collection.
