Description

This event has been cancelled.

As we embrace social distancing, and look for creative ways to share art and inspiration, CAA is launching a series of Virtual Studio visits. We will host these visits via ZOOM, allowing up to 100 guests to ‘visit’ local artist's studios, ask questions about the artists work and progress, and share in community, from a distance. For our fourth Virtual Studio Visit, we are pleased to visit the studio of Sylvia Vander Sluis!

All attendees must register for this event in order to receive the link and login information for the ZOOM event.

About Sylvia' Artwork: Sylvia Vander Sluis is a mixed-media artist who explores material’s expressive potential. Using a variety of papers from red rosin to Tyvek, she is now creating complex forms by wrapping, bunching, layering, and painting the paper. From 2017-2019, her handwoven and knit fiber figures talked about the nature of personal power and resilience. In her “Torso” and “Pelvis” series, Vander Sluis played with both masculine and feminine forms. “My work gives the personal a physical presence that has emotional power,” she states. “I like the idea of making what is most vulnerable in us strong and beautiful.”

About Sylvia: Sylvia Vander Sluis graduated with an MFA from Western Michigan University and BFA cum laude from Syracuse University. Artmaking has always been a part of her life. She enjoyed a long business career as a worldwide program manager at Digital/Compaq/Hewlett-Packard, where she specialized in corporate training and business process improvement. Vander Sluis is a Core Member of Fountain Street Gallery in Boston and has a studio in her Lancaster, MA home. She completed an Artist Residency at Vermont Studio Center in January 2020, had work in the Surface Design Association (SDA)’s Winter 2019 Marigolds & Unicorns Journal, and is currently featured in SDA’s Current Threads Online Exhibition. Vander Sluis’ work has been shown in numerous Northeast venues, including NYC, Upstate NY, and the Greater Boston area.
