Description

New Program!

As we embrace social distancing, and look for creative ways to share art and inspiration, CAA is launching a series of Virtual Studio visits. We will host these visits via ZOOM, allowing up to 100 guests to ‘visit’ local artist's studios, ask questions about the artists work and progress, and share in community, from a distance. For our this Virtual Studio Visit, we are pleased to visit the studio of Claudia Ruiz-Gustafson!

Virtual Studio Visits are free, and open to all!

If you are not already registered in our database, you can close the account login pop-up on the registration page by clicking the X in the top right corner, and then proceed with your registration.

The link to the ZOOM event will be emailed in the morning on the scheduled event date.

About Claudia's Artwork: Maria is a conversation with the past, an intimate and personal revelation of connection and loss between where we come from and where we are. After completing the first part of Historias fragmentadas, I noticed there was one important person missing in the photo collages; a live-in maid my parents hired when we moved to the suburbs of Lima when I was 7. She doesn’t appear in any family portrait and sadly, we didn’t know her last name or her birthday, since domestic help in Peru is usually hired without written contracts, so attempts to locate her were futile. Her name was Maria, and she had eventually left us to start a family of her own. It was a sad departure for me because Maria had been my confidante, my friend during a vulnerable time in my life. I created this series in my family home in Lima, Peru, where furniture and ornaments have remained unchanged over the years. For this project, I worked with a Qhechua woman to represent Maria, and for weeks we collaborated in the house where my parents still live today to honor an important woman in my life and the unconditional love I was given.

About Claudia: Originally from Lima, Perú, Claudia Ruiz Gustafson is a fine art photographer based in Massachusetts. Her work is mainly autobiographical and self-reflective; each image relies on visual codes and symbolism often portraying themes of femininity, memory, dreams and personal mythology. She regards image making as a powerful medium for exploring her own inner world. Claudia currently runs her own portrait photography business and teaches Creative Photo Classes in the Boston area. Her fine art work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the US and abroad. She holds a BA in Communications from Universidad de Lima, and a Professional Photography Certificate from Kodak Interamericana de Perú. In Lima, she worked as a freelance photographer for a cultural magazine and as a photojournalist for a regional newspaper.
