Description

Shapes, Color, and Space

The still life has been reworked since the beginning of art. It's been interpreted by Caravaggio to Lichtenstein to your high school art teacher. This workshop will be an introduction on how to create energetic still lifes from our everyday life. Taking inspiration from Henri Matisse's Cutout period, participants will explore the use of shape, color, and space. The goal is to come away with basic knowledge of how to simplify shapes and use expressive colors to create a dynamic composition. This process is not limited to one medium. Digital art programs, paint, construction paper, or anything else that can create blocks of color works. Any experience level is welcome, but prior practice with drawing from life is helpful.

Session 1 will focus on instruction

Session 2 will be sharing and feedback on completed work

About Mary-Kate Parkhurst

Mary-Kate Parkhurst is an artist, graphic designer, and illustrator, among other things who is based in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2018, she graduated with a BFA in Studio Art with distinction in her field from Emmanuel College. When she isn’t helping run Boston General Store, she can be found running around Emmanuel College’s art department as a teacher’s assistant for Intro to Printmaking or holed up in a coffee shop working on personal projects. In early 2019, she decided to take a leap of faith and open up a multidisciplinary creative business in her name. Her work includes portrait commissions, illustration, graphic design, and branding. Her work is also featured in Art in Print Volume 4 through Harvard's Zone 3 Initiative in Allston. Mary-Kate enjoys any and all plants, and she is constantly redecorating her house, attempting to participate in as many 5K runs as she can.
