White Line Woodcuts with Annie Bissett
White line woodcuts, also called “Provincetown prints,” are a unique hybrid between monoprints and Japanese style watercolor woodcuts. Developed in the early 20th century by a group of artists living on Cape Cod, white line prints are multicolor prints created on a single block of wood rather than on multiple blocks. A line drawing or design is incised on the block with a knife or gouge creating v-shaped cuts, which become white lines when printed. Each area between the lines is then hand colored with watercolor or gouache and hand printed, usually with a spoon, until the print is complete.
In this in-person workshop you will be guided through all three of the processes involved—design transfer, carving, and printing—and you’ll go home with all you need to continue this simple printing practice at home. All are welcome to come and explore the possibilities inherent in this simple and fun method of relief printing, regardless of previous woodcut experience.
$10 materials fee for woodblock and printing paper included in registration. For all other materials needed for the class, please review Annie’s detailed supply list. Link below:
About Annie Bissett
Currently based in Providence RI, Annie Bissett is a mostly self-taught artist who began her career as a freelance digital illustrator, working with clients such as National Geographic Society, The Washington Post, and a wide range of magazines. In 2005 she studied briefly with New Hampshire woodblock artist Matt Brown and soon afterward she began pursuing printmaking full time. Her woodblock prints have been exhibited throughout the US, in Japan, and in the U.K. and Canada. She has been on the teaching staff at Zea Mays Printmaking in Florence, MA, for over a decade and, as watercolor woodblock printing has gained in popularity, she also travels to other locations to conduct workshops.
