Description

Abstracting the Landscape: Plein Air Painting on the Charles River, with Amanda Hawkins

Location: Charles River Reservation IV, 1175A Soldiers Field Rd., Boston, MA 02116 (parking available onsite; a specific meeting location will be communicated to registrants one week prior to the workshop)

Raindate: The raindate for this workshop is scheduled for Sunday, October 17 (11am-2pm)

This outdoor workshop uses the landscape as a way to enter an abstract painting language. The class will look to the surrounding landscape as inspiration to explore the golden light, orange foliage, and crisp blue sky of the New England autumn through expressive mark, color relationship, value, and composition.

The entirety of the class will take place outside on the banks of the Charles River. The class will begin with several drawing exercises to assist the artists in seeking a composition, loosening up, and identifying value structure. Following, artists will begin to engage their canvas using direct painting techniques. Artists should expect to leave class with warm-up drawings, compositional and value studies and one small - medium sized painting.

Students will be required to bring their own materials and plein air painting setup. Please note that easels will not be provided for this workshop. For a detailed list of suggested materials, see the link below:
