Talk: Best Practices for Artists When Seeking Gallery Representation
Tuesday, November 15 (7:00-8:00pm) on Zoom - SOLD OUT
How do emerging and mid-career artists find gallery representation? Contemporary artists have a variety of ways to get their work out into the world via social media and the internet but gallery representation is still seen as the holy grail of success for professional artists. The Cambridge Art Association invites you to an online panel discussion of best practices for artists when seeking gallery representation. Beth Kantrowitz of bkprojects, LaiSun Keane of LaiSun Keane Gallery, and Arlette Kayafas of Gallery Kayafas will discuss acceptable and unacceptable ways for artists to engage with galleries. Participants will be invited to submit their questions in advance during the registration process. This event will not be an opportunity for artists to display or talk about their own artwork, or seek gallery representation with the panel members.
Please email your questions for the panelists to Stephanie Todhunter at stodhunter@cambridgeart.org by November 10 at 5pm.
About Beth Kantrowitz
Most people know her as the Co-Director of Drive-by Projects in Watertown, MA and previously the acclaimed Allston Skirt Gallery in Boston. She has 20+ years of experience with artists working in all media in Boston and beyond. This gives her a unique perspective on the arts community - inspiring her to curate thought-provoking exhibitions at galleries and unusual venues.
About LaiSun Keane
LaiSun Keane (she/her) is the owner of an eponymous gallery in Boston’s SoWa Arts District, which specializes in contemporary works of art by American and International artists. LaiSun graduated with a Bachelor of Art Theory from University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia. After graduating, she was involved with the non-profit gallery, the National Art School Gallery, and a commercial art gallery, AAG, which specialized in Australian Aboriginal Art. She moved to Boston in 2013 and in her indefatigable fashion, dived straight into the local art scene volunteering with many film festivals and non-profit art establishments. It ultimately led to her involvement with a long established ceramic gallery in Concord for five years, of which the final two years she was a partner. In April 2020, LaiSun started her own gallery, and has since staged ten exhibitions focusing on emerging artists, women, minorities and the overlooked.
About Arlette Kayafas
Arlette Kayafas opened Gallery Kayafas in 2003 in Boston’s then new gallery district in the South End. The gallery exhibited photographs from renowned photographers often pairing them with new emerging artists. Kayafas and her husband, Gus, have been collecting photography for more than five decades and the gallery only shows work that she would consider adding to the collection. In 2012, the gallery expanded its programming to include contemporary paintings, installation, works on paper, sculpture, and video while maintaining its focus on photography. Kayafas believes that the work shown in the gallery must engage perceptually while having a rigorous underlying message – the artist’s voice. Arlette selects artists who have strong insights and are committed to articulating them through their work. One of the gallery’s missions is to offer a platform for the artist to be heard and visitors to have an experience which brings about thoughtful attention.
